Men and Women Share Sexual Intentions
08/04/07
By SexHerald Staff

A study conducted at the University of Texas has taken the most in-depth look at why people have sex and has found that when it comes to moving toward the bedroom, men and women aren’t all that different.

Psychology researchers David Buss and Cindy Meston investigated 237 possible motivations for why people climb under the sheets. Of those 237 reasons, the most popular choice was to achieve physical pleasure. The “it feels good” factor was found to be the overwhelming choice of men and women.

Buss and Meston conducted two rounds of surveys, the first of which polled over 400 men and women; the second asked questions of more than 1,500 undergraduate students. The combined studies compiled answers from college-aged students that included every reason from “I was bored” to “I wanted the person to feel good about him/herself.”

The survey participants admitted motivations for sex even ranged into vindictive attitudes including responses like, “I wanted to break up a rival’s relationship” or “I wanted to give someone else a sexually transmitted disease.”

The study helped researchers outline four major reasons why people have sex: physical reasons and desires, goal-based reasons (ranging from becoming pregnant to securing a promotion), emotional reasons such as love and the desire to please your partner, and insecurity-based reasons where sex was used to bolster self-confidence or keep a partner from cheating.
