Doctor George Tiller, a physician from Wichita, Kansas, was shot and killed during his service as an usher for Reformation Lutheran Church. Scott Roeder is a suspect for the murder.
Tiller is most famous for being one of three physicians in the United States willing to provide late-term abortions.
Witnesses say Roeder shot Tiller in the head and left after threatening those trying to stop him. Roeder was found three hours later in Kansas City, 170 miles from the church.
Roeder is an antigovernment extremist. He has no official ties to any pro-life organization, but has protested outside clinics, including Tiller’s, for years.
While there is no specific gestation period for late-term abortions, the fetus is generally more viable, or able to sustain extrauterine environment. The shortest successful gestation periods recorded are just under 22 weeks.
