Internet Porn Obsessions Pose Risk to Relationships
05/31/07
By Anna Kent

Psychologists and sexual health experts view the popularity of Internet porn as a strong and growing cause of the deterioration of relationships. In Australia, Sydney’s Morning Herald has conducted an investigation to show how too much pornography can bring about the destruction of couple’s sex lives, women’s self esteem and their sense of trust for their partners.

In the process of the investigation, the Herald found the number of Australians using Internet pornography to be at an all time high. The research found an increase of 500,000 people using porn websites over the past 18 months. The implications of this surge in usage suggest the behaviors could be bordering impulsive or obsessive.

Differing views as presented by researchers at the Queensland University of Technology argue that the increase in the viewing of porn may actually have a positive effect on ideas of sexuality. Research conducted at the University supports this claim in showing that over half of 1,000 people surveyed reported a positive shift in their views about sex.

While the concern of the impact Internet porn may have on women and relationships still exists, the industry continues to boom.
