Larry Flynt's full-page ad offering $1 million for the indiscretions of a politician has paid off with the confession of Sen. David Vitter's guilt in using a Washington D.C.-based escort service. The confession came after a journalist found Vitter's phone number in the escort service's phone records.
The admission so far is simply an acknowledgment of his phone number being on record with the service. There has been no verification that Vitter had hired or had sex with a prostitute. The service, run by Deborah Jean Palfrey, is currently in legal limbo with accusations of money laundering, racketeering and prostitution. In order to raise money for defense, Palfrey attempted to sell the telephone records. This was banned by the court but some client information was still released. When investigative journalist Dan Moldea discovered the senator's phone number, he passed the information on to Flynt.
Vitter released a statement on Monday wherein he apologizes to any he may have let down as a result of this news. He also said, “Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and from my wife in confession and in marriage counseling.”
It has been confirmed that the records are from before Vitter had won his seat in the Senate but it still comes as a shock to constituents. Vitter leans to the conservative side and has been an active voice in attempting to place bans on same-sex marriage.
Jeanette Maier, a madam in New Orleans, claims that Vitter also frequented her business called the Canal Street Brothel. The brothel was shut down in 2002 and Vitter and his attorney are denying any connection with the business.
The link between Vitter and Palfrey is the first involving a lawmaker but in May another political scandal involving the D.C. madam led to the resignation of Randall Tobias. Tobias, a State Department Official, had been a promoter of abstinence education in the Bush Administration before stepping away from his position. HustlerDigsupPoliticalDirt
