Hooters Bikini Contest Deemed Degrading
06/30/06
By Ethan Donway

Organizers of bikini contest fundraiser “Hooters for Neuters” received criticism from city officials who said the contest degraded women.

The L.A. Times reported that certain officials requested the Hooters chain reassess having their contest even though the proceeds will go to benefit the city department of Animal Services spaying and neutering programs.

Fliers endorsing the July 13 th event displayed a minimally dressed model, the new fliers feature a dog with a shirt that says “Hooters for Neuters.” Jan Perry, a councilwoman, criticized the city department saying it had “crossed the line” by allowing the fundraiser and city controller, Laura Chick, said that the contest goes against the city’s attempts to promote women’s empowerment and fight discrimination.

Ed Boks, the Director of Animal Services, made an apology to the city council but said the bikini contest would commence as planned.
