An adult film actress has tested positive for HIV, the first in a working performer since 2004, when male actor Darren James and his actress-partners contracted the virus and shut down production across studios for a month.

Both the woman’s boyfriend and scene partner (her only recent sex partners) have tested negative but are currently under industry quarantine. Their sex partners (six in total) have been notified.

At least 18 unpublicized HIV tests have been found by Los Angeles County public health since 2004. The Adult Industry Medical Foundation (AIM) notes that though they cater to adult performers, they serve everyone. Some previously unpublicized tests were on aspiring actresses who dropped out. Some did not perform at all.

It takes 9-11 days after infection to test positive. Many argue for more frequent tests and/or mandatory condom use. Currently, the voluntary industry standard is to test every 30 days. Condom use varies with each studio. Gay porn stars, generally, do not regularly test for HIV.

Despite the scare, the AIM maintains this is not widespread and is under control.
