The State Benefit Card that Hakim Nelson was issued last April identifies him as a female. Hakim, who dresses as a woman and calls himself Kimah, enjoyed the mistake. He presented it to the City Clerk's Office to marry his partner, Jason Stenson.
The couple, Nelson still looking feminine, was surprised that they did not need more identification, but they were not about to correct anyone. They had applied online and collected their license a few days later.
Once they received the license, Nelson and Stenson returned to the office 10 days later for the ceremony and certificate. They were each wearing $10 silver rings.
The city acknowledges the mistake, saying that no system is foolproof. They also explain that the marriage is clearly illegal and void.
Applying for couple’s housing, Nelson and Stenson were asked for more documentation, and their request was denied.
