In Beijing, police raided a counterfeit drug ring and found 18,000 fake Viagra pills Wednesday. More than 30 people were apprehended during the raid and are being held on suspicion of making or selling the fake drugs.
The group was working out of Zhejiang, an eastern province, and selling the fake Viagra to 12 countries. Police found that the United States and Holland were two of the countries being sold to. This newly uncovered counterfeit drug ring has been brought down in a national crackdown that began in 2005.
The Ministry of Public Security, which is responsible for the focus on counterfeit products, has been exposing fake goods ranging from toothpaste to pet food to pharmaceuticals. One of the previous pharmaceutical raids uncovered the production of fake Tamiflu, a drug used for bird flu, and resulted in the detainment of 19 suspects and the closing of six factories.
The focus on Chinese counterfeiting problems was brought to the U.S. last April when pet food manufactured in China proved to contain tainted wheat gluten. The counterfeiting problem has been a focus in China since the deaths of 13 babies caused by using fake baby formula.
