Women who suffer from diabetes and experience sexual dysfunctions, such as vaginal dryness and discomfort, may benefit from the drug Viagra ™, say Dr. Salvatore Caruso and associates from the University of Catania in Italy.
In order to test their theory, they tested 32 women with type 1 diabetes who experienced normal sexual desire in the past but currently experienced dysfunction of some kind for an average of 3.5 years. The women were randomly assigned Viagra™ or a sugar pill and instructed to take the medication an hour before having sex.
Those that were assigned Viagra™ were then switched to the placebo and vice versa. An ultrasound was used to determine blood flow to the clitoris. The erectile dysfunction drug was associated with increased blood flow while the placebo was determined to have no affect.
