Silverton, Oregon is home to Stu Rasmussen, the first openly transgender mayor in the United States. He (and he prefers the male pronoun) dresses as a woman and has received breast implants. He has also drawn many fans, and one complaint.
Stu (and he prefers Stu) was asked to attend a training event for non-profit youth program Silverton Together. Stu is a member of the group’s Board of Directors.
Director Brenda Sturdevant found Stu’s attire too revealing, and consulted city council dress code. Stu wore a skirt, high heels, and a top exposing his chest. Dress code prohibits miniskirts and tanktops.
Mayor Stu finds the dress concern “trite,” and is troubled to see such intolerance from a group chartered to promote diversity.
Mayor Stu was elected as mayor first in 1988, before he came out with his transgender inclinations. He was re-elected 1990. After the term, he came out and received breast augmentation surgery. When he ran for mayor again, he won by 13 points. He identifies most strongly as a heterosexual male.
