Hilary Clinton, Secretary of State, has sent a notice to the employees of the US State Department, pushing for equal treatment of diplomats’ partners regardless of gender.
The notice argues the practical and moral benefits of equal treatment for employees and their loved ones. It cites giving experienced and talented employees more reason to work with the department and maintains, “It is the right thing to do.”
The notice must go through more review before it can be put into practice, but the State Department does seem to support it.
Added rights include diplomatic passports, evacuation from a hazardous country, special early-round application for embassy employment, and coverage by a partner’s health insurance.
