A new study adds a crucial reason for male smokers in particular to start considering going cold turkey: erectile dysfunction.
The Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans has released the findings of their recent study. The study tracked the multiple effects of smoking with a focus on particular functions of the male anatomy. Lead researcher and professor of epidemiology Jiang He studied 7,684 men between the ages of 35 and 74.
Using questionnaires, researchers asked participants about sexual function. Researchers found a significant statistical link between smoking and erectile dysfunction. The link was also translated to the number of cigarettes smoked per day. The more cigarettes smoked, the more likely the man was to experience ED.
The link was found to be even stronger in patients with diabetes. None of the men who participated suffer from any vascular disease which could contribute to erectile dysfunction.
The study may help develop anti-smoking campaigns with a focus on this new health risk.
