Chinese Scientists Find Bras Don't Measure Up
08/01/07
By SexHerald Staff

Scientists in Hong Kong have been testing new designs for sizing bras with the hope of providing better support and more accurate sizing. Until now, people worldwide have been relying on a bra sizing system developed in America in 1935.

The new system is intended to provide more shapely outlines and better comfort for the wearer. Designs are currently being tested with Chinese women but it is hoped that success of the new measurement system will change designs around the world.

Traditional sizing methods have relied on two measurements alone: going under and across the breast. The Chinese researchers have found that a truly perfect fit would incorporate more than 100 measurements. In order to create a sizing system appropriate for the garment market, the number of necessary measurements has been honed down to eight.

In establishing these measurements, scientists analyzed 3D breast scans of 465 Chinese women. They found that the necessary eight factors were overall build, breast volume, inner, outer and lower breast shape, height, and gradient and orientation. The new method is based on depth-to-width ratios, also known as DWR.

Scientists anticipate changing not only the market for intimate apparel but believe that the new system will also have an impact on plastic surgery in determining implant sizes.
