Los Angeles Times columnist Joel Stein backed out of teaching a fellatio seminar for adult retailer Babeland resulting in accusations of censorship coming from the publication.
Stein, who writes a wide range of varied and sometimes explicit subjects, had thought it might be a fun endeavor when he agreed to teach the “how-to” seminar and follow it up with matching articles. However, when Stein's L.A. Times editor's got word of his intentions, the plug was pulled.
The marketing director for Babeland, Mae Shultz, received an unhappy phone call from Stein one day after the press release promoting the event. Stein claimed his editors were “freaking out” and backed out of the seminar teaching and article writing.
Babeland has posted a reaction on the website blog where the company voices suspicion of censorship from the L.A. Times. The newspaper’s editors have not ventured a comment.
