Australia’s Sex Party
08/13/09
By Pierce Delahunt

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has officially registered the Australian Sex Party, a political party focused on issues like gay marriage, sex education reform, and transgender equality.

The AEC considered complaints against the name, claiming that “Sex Party” to be obscene, but decided the name was relevant to their issues and unlikely to corrupt voters.

Registration entitles the Sex Party to public funding of their election campaigns should they receive more than 4 percent of the primary vote, and of course a place on the ballot.

Australia currently has 28 registered parties, including the Sex Party, and What Women Want. The United States has 24 parties with recent candidates.

Sex Party convenor Fiona Patten speaks out, “One of the reasons for establishing the party was to provide a positive platform for sexual issues among the negative notions of sex that most politicians and political parties have.”

“The fact that the AEC spent so much time considering the word ‘sex’ further exhibits our need for honest and open discussion about sexual matters, be they censorship, education, health or discrimination ones.”
